Growing up Green

A Native American proverb reminds us: "We do not inherit this land from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children." We all hope to give our children a healthy planet, and so we need to protect it now. For this reason, the Manassas City Public Schools are pleased to announce our adoption of the Go Green Initiative. The Go Green Initiative is a comprehensive environmental program that teaches earth-friendly behaviors and will aid us in the evaluation of our environmental impact. It is endorsed by the National School Board Association, the National Recycling Coalition, and PTAs in several states.
The Go Green Initiative depends upon a partnership involving students, teachers, administrators, custodians, and parents and can be aligned with existing Virginia Standards of Learning curriculum. Through activities such as recycling, composting, and waste reduction, the Go Green Initiative encourages environmentally responsible behavior in and out of the classroom. The program focuses on five basic principles:
  1. G enerate compost - it's nature's way of recycling.
  2. R ecycle everything that cannot be reused and purchase items that can be recycled.
  3. E ducate students, parents, and teachers about environmentally responsible behavior.
  4. E valuate the environmental impact of every activity.
  5. N ationalize the principles of responsible paper consumption.
